Vice President Yemi Osinbajo frowned at the re-arrest of Omoyele Sowore, the #RevolutionNow convener, and declined a Wole Soyinka Investigative Journalism Center award for this reason.
The vice president who was a keynote speaker in the UAE explained why he refused to accept the award for his accomplishments in Nigeria's justice system.
In a statement from his spokesman, Laolu Akande, the Vice President said in view of Friday's developments in the Sowore incident, "I think it would be insensitive and inappropriate to attend the ceremony." Osinbajo then proceeded to thank the event's organizers for considering him for an award.
"I am extremely grateful for the recognition and achievement of the 2019 Anti-Corruption Defender Achievement" Integrity Specialty of the Wole Soyinka Center for Investigative Journalism.
"The prize, I remember, is in Lagos State for our efforts to reform the justice system. In behalf of the outstanding Justice Sector group we had, I accepted the award with pride.
"Two explanations, however, justify my absence. Next, I'm in Abu Dhabi for an international conference under the auspices of the UAE government, where I'm the keynote speaker.
"Second, in view of Friday's developments in the Sowore event, I conclude that attending the ceremony would be insensitive and inappropriate.
"Please accept my heartfelt apologies and extend the same to the organizing team's other members. God bless you, "reads the statement.
