The purpose is to build the capacity of early-career academics at African universities by allowing them to work with highly senior and experienced researchers while taking time away from teaching responsibilities at their home institutions. One research fellow from a country other than the CoE's host country is intended to be hosted by each CoE.

To complement its objectives, ARUA has developed thirteen (13) Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in diverse fields. These CoEs reflect ARUA's current priority areas, and they are projected to improve research and graduate education significantly. Currently, the CoEs are organised as follows: (i) Energy, (ii) Unemployment and Skills Development, (iii) Noncommunicable Diseases, (iv) Inequalities Research, (v) Notion of Identity in Africa, (vi) Migration and Mobility, (vi) Sustainable Food Systems, (viii) Urbanization and Habitable Cities, (ix) Climate and Development, (x) Good Governance, (xi) Post-Conflict Societies, (xii) Water and (xiii) Materials, Energy & Nanotechnology (MEN).

ARUA is offering an Early Career Research Fellowship that will continue for six months and will fund the work of these Centers. Prospective research fellows are expected to stay at the individual CoE's hub university during this time and undertake research relating to their current projects. With the consent of the Centre's Director, successful candidates may also pursue new paths of research. Prospective candidates are urged to familiarize themselves with the active research initiatives of the 13 CoEs by visiting the ARUA website and those of the 13 CoEs.
