Moderna Produced A New Booster For COVID-19 Omicron Variant

Moderna has released promising preliminary results for an improved coronavirus vaccine that targets the Omicron type.

As a booster dose of the original vaccination, it was demonstrated to produce 1.75 times the level of neutralizing antibodies against Omicron.

Experts warn, however, that the virus is fast mutating and that the ability to adapt vaccinations through human clinical trials may be limited.

For months, Omicron has been producing subvariants, and some researchers believe that what matters now is how well a new booster formulation protects against the most recent subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5, rather than Omicron itself.

According to health officials, BA.4 and BA.5 now account for 13% of new coronavirus cases in the United States, up from 7.5 percent a week ago. These new Omicron subvariants appear to spread much faster than previous forms, and they may be stronger at evading the immune system's defenses. It's uncertain if they induce more serious illness.

At the end of the month, outside consultants to US health officials will meet to assess which vaccine formulation might function best as an autumn booster. Vaccine producers have stated that they will need to begin production as soon as possible.
